Minnie Matoush, Cree Nation ~ My Christian name is Minnie Matoush. I am of the Cree First Nation of Mistissini, James Bay Northern Quebec. Presently, I work as a career counselor for the Cree School Board, Post Secondary Student Services located in Gatineau. My first language is Cree and I am a fluent speaker. I mainly work in a second language of English. I walk in two worlds, one following the educational path of the academia and the other learning my traditional teachings from my elders, teachers. I began returning to First Nation traditional knowledge when I entered my Masters in Education back in 2001. I graduated from M. Ed at Ottawa U. on October 2005. It seemed appropriate at the time that I learn from my adopted grandmothers and grandfathers about the teachings of ceremonies. I began my healing journey to reclaim those teachings that have been dormant within my own life. I have been very blessed to encounter many teachers along this journey, some who tested my abilities and some who encouraged me to attempt higher learning in both worlds. To date, I have completed the third level of the Medicine Wheel teachings, a basic introduction to the worldview of First peoples of Turtle Island. I continue to do my training and hope to achieve the fourth level where I will learn more about ceremonies such as the purification lodge, and traditional healing practices. I began using the Medicine Wheel teachings and the circle of life to keep balance within my own personal journey and how I relate to all my relations. For the past five years, I had a wonderful opportunity to share these teachings to elementary, secondary, post secondary classrooms and faculty of various institutions, Aboriginal organizations, Residential Schools Resolution Canada office employees to name a few. These teachings are not to be put aside but shared with those who lend an ear and ready to receive these teachings.
I always address my audience in my first language as this is the first language I came to know when I entered Mother Earth. And when requested, I share the smudge with those who wish to participate. For those women who are on their moon time (menstruation), you do not need to smudge as you are already in cleansing time.
I am also a member of Every Woman’s Drum, a traditional hand drumming women’s group with members from various native and non-native backgrounds. We have been drumming together since Fall 2003, and make public performances at various venues such as the Black History Month program, Every Child Is Sacred annual celebration and at other organizations and conferences in the National Capital Region, peaceful protests on Parliament Hill and the list grows each year.

Dale Allen has been igniting audiences at universities, conferences, executive women’s meetings, holistic learning centers and theaters nationwide. Her passionate message guides women to their strength as leaders, and restores in men and women, the validity of right-brain, “feminine” strengths. Described as a "Cape Canaveral lift-off," this dynamic, multi-media 1 hour 15 minute performance features history, myth, original songs, art, artifacts, characters and comedy. Dale Allen, a 15-year veteran of corporate and commercial communications, gives voice to a brilliant, long-forgotten intelligence that is within each of us – the intelligence of the right hemisphere of the brain, the “feminine gatherer-nurturer” side. In Our Right Minds explores the Goddess archetype as a metaphor for our right-brain wisdom. Without an understanding of this archetype, women have been left with no clear model to guide them to their strength and wholeness, and men have been forced to suppress vast parts of their own intuitive, emotional and nurturing natures. The piece uncovers the roots of our left-brain dominant culture, looking at the emergence of alphabetic literacy across the world and the correlating subjugation of women and all things “female.” Returning to a time before written history, In Our Right Minds retrieves ancient definitions of “woman." In these ancient cultures, female power was valued, as wells as creativity, nurturing, earth, and the eternal cycles of nature. The strengths of the right brain were integrated and these cultures were more balanced. As humanity is once again utilizing the strengths of the right hemisphere through the use of modern technologies that rely on right-brain skills, we are poised to create a more balanced society. In Our Right Minds explores this unprecedented time of transition with optimism, calling us into our role as designers of a new reality. Official website
